The exhibition

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem during the course of a year. That could be you or me. Or it could be John Hannah, Patsy Palmer or Paul Merton.

1 in 4 is a stunning collection of powerful black & white portraits of people who have experienced mental health problems - and want to challenge the stigma and discrimination that still surrounds one of society’s last taboos. Each photo is accompanied by a frank personal account of mental distress – and other people’s reactions. As Paul Merton says, “People don’t feel ashamed for having a broken leg, so why a mental illness?”

1 in 4 sets out to provoke people to ‘change their mindset’ and banish the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health.

The creators

The 1 in 4 portraits have been shot by Brian Moody and the interviews have been conducted by Marina Cantacuzino. Marina and Brian work with celebrities on a regular basis and have documented stories on the genocide in Rwanda, child soldiers in Sierra Leone and Mines in South East Asia.

The response

1 in 4 was launched at the OXO Gallery in London on 6th February 2002. In the opening ten days the exhibition attracted more than 4200 visitors. The exhibition also gained widespread media interest with features in The Sunday Times, Easyjet, Hello and Real magazines. Tanis Taylor of Metro newspaper "There's absolutely nothing to differentiate the Mertons and Palmers from the Gill Taylors and Roland Joneses and this is precisely the point. One in four isn't an isolated outbreak, it's a common cold and we're all equally susceptible."

The tour

1 in 4 is now touring England. For more information on where you can see the exhibition see tour dates .
