Mindshift: media training and awareness initiative

In a recent survey, 64% of journalists said they felt media coverage of mental health issues could be improved. David Lloyd, Head of News, Current Affairs & Business at Channel 4 has called mental health issues “the next big battleground of human rights”.

mind out for mental health
is running Mindshift – an initiative to help people working in the media to address the important challenges – and opportunities – in reporting mental health issues. Consisting of workshops for trainee journalists, and a handy guide to important issues and sensitivities surrounding mental health reporting, the initiative is being supported by the NUJ and the Society of Editors. Workshops have been held in universities, such as London College of Printing and City College Brighton, as well as in publishing houses and media organisations.

"Students found the subject stimulating and interesting and enjoyed discussing the issues raised. It formed a valuable part of our scheme of work on ethics and should prove extremely useful in their future journalistic careers."
Paula O'Shea, Journalism Course Manager
City College Brighton and Hove
